The Dopoi Center is located on ten acres of land overlooking the Maasai Mara Game Reserve in a rural and remote high savannah area of the Rift Valley near the town of Talek. The land is covered with acacia, olive, and other savannah vegetation and over 300 species of birds including weaver, shrike, and spurfolws. It is also inhabited by elephants, lions and other ungulate species. The Center is also surrounded by villages and their herds of cattle; several lodges are located nearby, especially along the Talek River, as well as private conservancies. The Dopoi Center currently houses a 5000 square foot building, with office and classroom space, a campground for housing, toilets, staff quarters and a temporary kitchen.
Because of its location, the center is perfectly positioned to facilitate research through a broad spectrum of disciplinary lenses and into an equally diverse range of issues.
The Center is rare in this part of Kenya. No Kenyan research stations are recognized by the Organization of Biological Field Stations.
The Dopoi Center was established to provide equipment and education to the Maasai community to support its interest in representing itself to the world outside of Maasailand. The station is housed in the Maasai Education, Research and Conservation Institute near Talek, runs on solar power, and has the capacity to shoot and edit film and record and edit sound. We are developing a digital library of interviews, music, and images.
Plans are being developed for a series of classes to train Maasai people to operate the station
Plans are in place to finish the development of the Dopoi Center. Please DONATE today to help with this project.
