Mark Henderson is President’s Professor Emeritus from Arizona State University where he taught engineering and served as Associate Dean of the Barrett Honors College, retiring in 2019. He is Co-Founder of GlobalResolve, a social entrepreneurship program in Barrett Honors College with goals to reduce the effects of poverty in the Global South and to empower students with experience to know they can make a difference. GlobalResolve was started in 2005 with a team of 4 faculty and 10 students helping provide clean water and electricity and has since worked on 150 projects with over 700 students working with communities in 14 countries on projects for water, energy, health, education and agriculture. Example projects include solar irrigation, smokeless stoves, microbial fuel cells, water filters and creation of biochar businesses. In 2003, Henderson co-founded the long-running InnovationSpace at ASU for multi-disciplinary student teams and faculty to develop new products. He has served on several boards including Carbon Roots International, ASU Retirees Association, GlobalResolve and the Advisory Board for the Maasai Education, Research and Conservation (MERC) Institute in Kenya. Henderson received his PhD in mechanical engineering from Purdue University in geometric modeling and computer graphics. He has lectured internationally and published across typical disciplinary boundaries including sustainable development, global design teams, frugal innovation, geometric modeling, intelligent CAD and 3D printing. Mark lives with his wife, Sue, in Chandler, Arizona and is proud of daughters, Erin and Abby, and son, Ben, all graduates of ASU.
